The USA is entering the final build-up to a historic first Para dance sport competition, taking place in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-11 August.

And it is not just the seven couples from the host country that are attracting attention.

The Dearborn 2024 Para Dance Sport International Competition will also see Canada make their global debut and new dancers from Mexico, competing alongside some big names.

The event is being organised by athlete Cheryl Angelelli, who will take to the floor with partner Tamerlan Gadirov in the combi duo Latin, freestyle and standard class 1.

Audrey Meade and Andrew Downs and Eve Dahl and Ernesto Olivas will also line-up in the class 2. Four other US pairings, featuring new athletes, will dance subject to classification.

Nancy Clarke and partner Alexandre Chalkevitch will also hope to make their debut for Canada after being classified.

An impressive seven couples and 12 singles dancers will form a large Mexican contingent as new athletes hope to enter the fray.

Their World Championships silver medallist, Antya Guadalupe Estrada Munoz, will face a tough challenge from Slovakia’s Helena Kasicka in the women’s single conventional freestyle class 1.

Kasicka will head out having collected the world title 18 months ago in Genoa, Italy, and is also the reigning champion in the freestyle.

Another Mexican, Haydee Guadalupe Reynosa Guerrero, and Edelyn de Asis of the Philippines will dance as the respective World Championships bronze and silver medallist in the women’s single conventional class 2.

De Asis is also the bronze medallist from the combi Latin class 2 with Shaquillo Basan and the world champion in the women’s single freestyle. In the duo freestyle class 2, de Asis will join forces with Julius Obero aiming to recreate their gold-medal winning performance from the most recent Worlds.

Dalay Angelique Carrera Perez and Angel Lopez Huizar are Mexico’s bronze medallists from the combi standard, freestyle and Latin class 1.

The Philippines are sending a strong line-up across the combi duos and singles events.

Julius Obero is the reigning men’s single conventional class 2 world champion. Bronze medallist Pawel Karpinski, from Poland, will also make the journey to Dearborn.

Anne Charlain Santos and Joey Maglasang are the bronze medallist from the duo standard and freestyle class 2.

A total of 65 athletes from 15 countries – and three continents – will compete at Dearborn 2024.

Competition gets underway on Saturday with the combi freestyle class 1 and 2, men’s and women’s singles freestyle class 1 and 2, the duo standard class 2 and combi standard class 1 and 2.

Sunday will feature the duo Latin and freestyle class 1 and 2, men’s and women’s single class 1 and 2 and the combi Latin class 1 and 2.
